Perfectionism

Evan: I’ve learned the hard way that perfectionism is like lugging around a duffle bag full of 100 lb. weights. I thought it would make me stronger but all it does is keep me from flying. What a waste of time and energy!

Jarrod: I’m hypercritical. I should be perfect because everyone always told me how brilliant I am.  If I don’t finish #1 every time, I believe I’m a failure. I’ve been told I’m defensive towards criticism, but the ones criticizing me are usually wrong.

Frank’s Tips: Perfectionism is toxic self-abuse. The very best athletes in every sport are only excellent… Not Perfect. Aim for 90% versus 110%.  This allows for wiggle room, while still being consistently excellent.

 

Negative Self-Talk

Evan: I remember you had our whole family play the FLIP IT game. Remember? Every time someone said a negative comment the rest of us would say “flip it!”  Man, we told Jarrod to “flip it” like a thousand times!

Jarrod: Oh yeah, but remember? Dad was worse than me! Every sentence out of his mouth started with:  “The problem is…” I’m actually only negative when things aren’t perfect.

Frank’s Tip: We listen to ourselves more than any other person. This is due to our inner dialog. Are you constantly lifting yourself up or tearing yourself down? Our inner chatter should sound like we’re talking to someone we love.

 

Strengthening emotional aptitude requires focusing optimistically on improving performance anxieties by applying the suggested tips. For most athletes, the likely cause of experiencing anxiety is emotionally experiencing failure …in advance.

Fear of Performing in Front of People

Evan: It’s really the fear of not being good enough, wouldn’t you say? The fear of letting friends and family down and giving the naysayers proof that they’re right. It’s more pressure to play to a crowd.

Jarrod: I love playing in front of people. I actually focus better because I want to show them how good I am. My brother is scared of center court… I love it!

Frank’s Tip: Play with fear as the dominant force and fear owns you. You can accept that fear is present but then choose to ignore it. View every spectator as envious of you. You’re on center stage. You’re living their dream. Accept imperfections and enjoy the fact that so many people respect the skills you’ve achieved.

 

Lack of Confidence

Evan: It’s amazing how much more confidence I have in my game with my new found preparation. I believe in my skills because my skills are tested every day. I’m courageous enough to trust my training and it feels good.

Jarrod: I avoid doing things that I’m not good at. I want to win at everything, so why would I try to do something I’m not good at? If it risks me looking bad…I avoid it, I’m not stupid!

Frank’s Tip: Confidence is built upon accountability. It’s the athlete’s daily, consistent accomplishments that increase their trust in their skills. Utilizing daily journals is a great accountability tool used to monitor daily accomplishments.

Common Performance Anxieties and their Solutions

Choking

Evan: To me, choking stems from having these unwanted contaminants in my head. As soon as I start to think about the ramifications of the outcome, I lose focus and get super tight. I know that if I’m in a match and I’m already thinking of where I’m going for lunch, I’m in trouble. Staying in my present, performance script is my solution.

Jarrod: No one ever beats me. I beat myself. Yeah, I’ve choked 100 times but everyone does. I don’t think that worrying about it solves anything. Who wants to go to Starbucks?

Frank’s Tips: Choking is most often caused by over-thinking about the future (outcomes) instead of staying in the performance state of mind.  Organizing verbal and physical triggers is a great way to stop choking. Applying basic triggers such as, “Let’s go- pump it up” or doing some kangaroo jumps to loosen up muscle tension may be the difference between winning and losing. In my experience, it is best for athletes of every level to apply a simple command (pre-set protocol) to help them refocus on their performance.

 

Panicking

Evan: Panicking is the opposite of choking, right? If choking is over thinking, panicking is underthinking. Sometimes I’m so angry I don’t apply my rituals. I just shut down mentally and emotionally and rush. That’s when I need to take way more time, breathe deeply and relax.

Jarrod: My parents say that in competition, I’m like a race car with no breaks. I’m not sure what that means but … I’ll take it as a compliment.

Frank’s Tip: Panicking stems from not trusting your talent and your training. It is seen by spectators as under-thinking and rushing through the performance. Again, solutions come in the form of triggers. Triggers to help stop panicking include. Saying “Relax, slow down and let’s enjoy the moment.” Physically, walk away. Take a timeout. Go to the towel. Customization is the key.

Problem Solving

Evan: I view matches as information gathering and problem-solving expeditions. I am constantly monitoring my own game as well as my opponent’s game. This includes techniques, athleticism, mental and emotional issues. I also pay close attention to the weather conditions because it may affect my decision making.

Jarrod: Yeah… I don’t stress about defining problems or working on solutions in practice. I’m just good at solving problems. I’m naturally awesome.

Frank’s Tip: Coaches and parents shouldn’t tell the student the problem. They should ASK the student “What is the problem? What is the solution?”  This encourages accountability and strengthens emotional aptitude.

 

The Wandering Mind

Evan: I apply the TV channel analogy you taught us. Each state of mind is like a different TV channel. In competition when I’m bored or scared, I choose to remain on my “performance script” TV channel. Controlling my focus allows me to stay on script without drama. I know that choosing to flip to other channels in competition due to under and over arousal complicates matters. So, if I do briefly drift away from my script, I’m trained to quickly return to my performance frame of mind.

Jarrod: Um, like… I don’t see the connection. Yeah, my mind wanders in and out of my performance frame of mind at times… But it wanders because the opponents are no good. I mean I can focus when I have to… I guess.

Frank’s Tip: The first question to ask an athlete with a wandering mind is, “What is pulling them off script? Is it an internal or external stimulus?” Internal distractions include thoughts such a negative outcome or physiological sensation such as a psychosomatic injury brought about by stress. External distractions include the elements, competitors, spectators, etc. While both internal and external stimuli may impede performance, it is essential to identify the cause of distraction in order to implement the proper solution.

To illustrate how unique personalities operate differently, I’d like to reintroduce you to the twins: Evan and Jarrod. Let’s again call upon the brothers to offer their take on the following top ten performance anxieties.

 

Handling Pressure

Evan: I thrive under pressure because I’ve focused on it every practice session. I enjoy the negative scoring drills. These stress-buster exercises keep me focused throughout the practice session. They make me accountable for every sloppy error. They help me not only with my fundamentals but with my decision making, my problem solving and my self-coaching/internal dialog.

Jarrod: Dude, I just like to crank the tunes in practice and groove. I don’t need to think about my emotions. So what…?  I get mad when I compete…I’m not worried about it!

Frank’s Tip: Multitask and incorporate stress simulation scoring into daily training. This develops the emotional muscle as well as the technique.

 

Mental Toughness

Evan: I’m probably more successful than my peers, but not because I’m a better athlete, but because I prepare my psychological responses to game time stress. I think it’s because we make the time to discuss all the emotional scenarios and have pre-set the appropriate protocols.

Jarrod: I don’t care about mental toughness in practice. I’ll save my focus and concentration for the real match. You mean players actually train their concentration and intensity levels? Wimps…

Frank’s Tip: Athletes and coaches often categorize emotional toughness as mental toughness. In my opinion, there is a difference between mental (X’s & O’s of strategy) and emotional (performance anxieties.) It’s important to correctly categorize the cause of the performance inabilities. For instance, is the athlete unaware of the proper strategy to be implemented or is the athlete so nervous and fearful their strategy is un-accessible under stress? Identifying the cause will help define the solution.

Common Performance Anxieties and their Solutions

 

Performance anxiety falls deeply into the emotional aptitude component of high-performance athletics. These anxieties affect millions of athletes, causing low self-esteem, wavering confidence and waning enjoyment of the game. Psychologists categorize performance anxiety into two basic categories:

State Anxiety: Is a temporary emotional state in response to a perceived threat.

Trait Anxiety: Is a personality trait as opposed to a temporary response.

This is an important distinction because a player with a trait anxiety condition may need professional help in dealing with their anxiety in everyday life.  Whereas a player with state anxiety can more easily be taught to control their response to competition.

Stress is inherent in competition.  So why do some athletes rise to the occasion and thrive under pressure while others wilt under the slightest bit of heat? The answer lies in the individual’s genetics as well as their upbringing. This is commonly referred to as nature and nurture.

 

SOLUTION: Identify the Athlete’s Stress Management Profile

Athletes begin competition with their own unique level of composure. To the untrained eye, two athletes warming up may appear to have a similar athletic ability, but once the competition begins it’s an entirely different story. The degree to which an athlete responds to stress depends on their frustration tolerance level.

Frustration tolerance is the ability to endure stress and maintain composure when met with obstacles.

An athlete’s frustration tolerance level is an essential topic.  It plays a crucial role in why seemingly gifted athletes lose.

Here are a few observations regarding frustration tolerance and opposing personalities under stress:

  • Some folks are both pre-wired and nurtured to agonize and over think. Others are pre-wired and nurtured combatants and ready to fight at the drop of a hat.
  • Some athletes become so overwhelmed by the opponent’s intensity that they emotionally withdraw. Other players get motivated by conflict and their energy rises to the occasion.
  • Some personalities are designed to thrive in fast pace settings – increasing their productivity under stress. While under the same stress, other personalities shut down due to the trauma.

 

I’ve found that the customization and repetition of practicing in the manner you’re expected to perform greatly assist those overthinking agonizers. By applying quality practice sessions (infusing simulated pressure into drills) over quantity practice sessions (stagnant familiar drills) overthinking agonizers can be nurtured to become strong competitors.

Why Character Building Matters

Jenny’s a full-time student at the First Strike Tennis Academy in Southern California and has been for nine years. In her own words: “I’m stuck, I’m SCTA ranked in the upper 80’s and going nowhere fast.” Her father says she’s a gifted player, but he’s frustrated because he’s shelling out an incredible amount of money each month and Jenny isn’t getting the results they believe she’s capable of achieving.

The coaching staff at First Strike had convinced Jenny that she’s doing everything she is supposed to do and just to be patient and she’ll see results soon. Jenny confided in me that her motivation is gone and she says she’s ready to hang up her rackets. She then broke down in tears as she revealed that although she’s good in practice, in competition her competitive grit, patience, and effort have abandoned her. She looked down and sobbed, “I’m just so tired of being average.” Jenny’s father interrupted and confessed, booking this session with you was our last resort.”

It didn’t take long to uncover the White Elephant on the court, which was the fact that Jenny has been training inefficiently for almost a decade.

Our initial conversation began with me asking Jenny some fundamental tennis developmental questions. “Since your telling me you know all too well how to be average, let me ask you an opposing question: Can you tell me how not to be average?” Jenny said, “Um…to do more training than my peers?” I smiled and said, “What’s even more important than the quantity of training?” “I don’t know… the quality of the training?” she responded. I agreed wholeheartedly. I then asked Jenny what she thought the difference was between group drilling and a customized developmental plan. “Well,” she said. “I guess a customized developmental plan focuses on individual needs versus group activities. I said, “Right again sister!”

I asked Jenny, about her tennis goals. She perked up and said, “It used to be to play D-1 Tennis at Stanford but …” “Ok, great!”  I jumped in. “Now what is your customized weekly plan to make it a reality? What are you doing week-in and week -out that is setting you far apart from your peers?” … (Crickets) “Let me ask you another way, has your only training been in the academy format? …More silence. I gave it the dramatic one minute pause, which to her must have felt like an hour.

I sat back and slowly explained, “I see the problem. Jenny, you don’t have a customized plan. A goal without a customized plan isn’t a goal at all …it’s simply a dream.” I explained to Jenny that everyone has dreams, but a dream isn’t going to come true without a specific weekly customized developmental plan. Jenny’s eye’s brightened, and I saw her beautiful smile for the first time.
“I believe you owe it to yourself to attack your tennis development from a new perspective. Let’s hit a few balls so I can see your strokes and movement.”

So we hit a few baskets of balls as I identified her strengths and weaknesses in her primary and secondary strokes. We then sat down and went to work designing her customized weekly planner based on her efficiencies and deficiencies within her four main components: strokes, athleticism, mental and emotional. Our evaluation session was a mind-blowing revelation to Jenny and her Dad. No one had ever actually dissected Jenny’s game, let alone provide customized solutions for improvement. Our first day together went by quickly as we evaluated and improved her tennis IQ, her emotional aptitude, her organizational skills and we made adjustments in her deficient coaching entourage.

Jenny didn’t need to groove her stationary strokes or to run more laps around the high school track. She needed to apply life skills, positive character traits and a renewed belief in herself. Throughout our few days together, I identified the direction of training required and simply motivated her to be accountable for organizing her very own training regimen. She applied solid character traits such as commitment and determination as she competently applied innovation to customize her brand new weekly blueprint. She was open-minded and humble throughout our sessions. Strong character traits are needed to champion tennis and life.

Within six months of completely modifying her life skills and positive character traits. Jenny achieved a top 10 SCTA ranking and went on to play D-1 College ball. (The names have been changed to protect the guilty).

Building character in young athletes is essential to the success of the athlete on and off the court. Positive character not only assists the athletes on the court but guides them as they make the world a better place. An excellent character is a secret precursor of winning. It drives performance which accelerates results. It’s the heartbeat of The Soft Science of Tennis. Sadly, in today’s generation, many parents assume that the coaches are teaching positive character traits and critical life skills, while coaches believe that it’s the parents who are educating these essential skills and sadly it’s a missing link in developing athletes.

Character counts, so what is character? It’s a combination of the athlete’s emotional qualities, beliefs, and values. Great character isn’t a genetic predisposition. Humans aren’t born with great character. Good character is a learned skill set with well nurtured emotional enhancements. One’s character, good or bad shines in all its glory when the athlete is in competition and under duress. Developing character molds the athlete’s inner dialog which either pumps them up or tears them down on a daily basis.

A modern term used in sports psychology is Posttraumatic Growth (PTG). Psychologists apply the term PTG to describe a positive psychological change that can result from a traumatic experience, such as athletic failure. Though losing may not seem like a tragic event to some, to others, competitive losses can be mentally and emotionally crippling.  PTG methodologies help clients through difficult situations by encouraging them to take responsibility with the power of choice.

The athlete can choose to fight or retreat. Tennis champions actually lose and lose often throughout their career. The athletes who choose to use their scar tissue as motivation to fight and endure the athletic pressure persevere and reach the top. Admirable character opens up the athlete to forge ahead instead of shutting down and giving up.

“You need to develop a thick skin” is a common mantra for strong character building. It’s an effective defense to the critics. Trust me, the most common way you know you’re rising above the crowd is when others begin to trash-talk and criticize you solely because of their petty jealousy. If athletes can’t be criticized, they should stay home, lay on the couch and stop improving immediately!”

In regards to character, actions speak louder than words. Parents and coaches need to remember that they are modeling character and that their actions have a more significant impact than their words. It is the role of parents and coaches to create a positive environment for ideal character building. Build character and lead by example:

  • It’s cool to be kind so choose kindness.
  • Vulnerability is a courageous character trait and not a weakness. So embrace vulnerability.
  • Share successes and failures. Share your story as a learning tool.
  • Laugh and joke as you apply humor to your daily training sessions.
  • Give credit to others for your success.
  • Compliment others daily on everything and anything.

Invest more time and energy in your positive character building, and you’ll witness your athletes modeling that behavior.

Character Traits
Character and a solid moral compass are part of the athlete’s foundation which dictates behavior and facilitates success. As for coaches, these same character traits found in a champion are the foundation of a sustainable business.

20 Essential Character Traits Worth Educating
Print the following 20 Essential Character Traits and review with your athlete. Discuss how each trait affects their personal tennis development.

1. Motivational: The reason or reasons for attaining your goals.
2. Trustworthiness: The ability to be relied on as honest or truthful.
3. Gratitude: The appreciation of actions and benefits bestowed upon you.
4. Accountability: The condition of being responsible for your actions.
5. Commitment: The position of being dedicated to your cause.
6. Respectfulness: A curious regard for others feelings or situation.
7. Grit: Strength of character; courage and resolve.
8. Integrity: Having a strong moral compass and principles.
9. Innovative: Applying creative problem solving and advanced thinking.
10. Competency: The ability to perform efficiently and successfully.
11. Honesty: Acting with fairness and righteous conduct.
12. Loyalty: A strong feeling of support or allegiance to your supporters.
13. Ethics: The morals and principles that govern your behavior.
14. Patience: The capacity to tolerate delay or suffering without getting upset.
15. Desire: A deep feeling of acquiring something or wishing for it to happen.
16. Effort: The amount of energy put into an attempt.
17. Sincerity: The quality of being free from pretense and deceit.
18. Open-Mindedness: The willingness to consider new ideas without prejudice.
19. Unselfishness: The willingness to accept the needs of others before your own.
20. Humble: Showing a modest estimate of your importance.

So does the participation in sports build praiseworthy character traits? Yes, but it does not happen by chance. An athlete builds strong character through consistent and optimistic nurturing and reinforcement by parents and coaches. The essential character traits gained on-court are reflected off-court and that gained off-court are reflected on-court creating distinguished young adults. Is your athlete being taught positive character traits?
