Managing Thoughts and Emotions – Part 3

In the heat of battle, it is important to recognize the cognitive difference between productive solutions based thoughts and the noise of unwanted contaminants.

When emotions are negatively controlling performance, the solution is finding a calm state of mind by applying a pre-set protocol specific to each athlete. This requires some thought. Quieting the mind and getting to a place of emotional stillness is emotional aptitude.

SOLUTION: Recognizing the Arousal State

A tip for athletes is to begin to acknowledge their arousal state. Be mindful. Why? Because without your knowledge … those emotions could be sabotaging your peak performance.

If most intermediate athletes could read their own minds during play, they’d be traumatized by what they find.  Without getting too “text book like,” an athlete’s state of mind is critical to control. The state of arousal can affect performance both positively and negatively. Of course, there’s a broad spectrum of negative stimuli called arousal. They range from low stimuli (under arousal) to high stimuli (over arousal). Low stimuli leads to a wandering mind and boredom. Such as thinking about the future- “Where’s the trophy going in my room?” High stimuli leads to panicking and fear without any proactive strategic thoughts. Such as hyper breathing, and going for more than the moment demands.

Be aware of your state of mind because it greatly impacts your performance.

Neuro Priming -Mental and Emotional Training

Coming Fall 2017
Frank Giampaolo’s Newest Release:

Neuro Priming for Peak PerformanceNEURO PRIMING FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE_3D

Until now, athletes routinely warmed up their hardware (strokes and athleticism) but rarely bothered to prime their software (mental and emotional) components for battle. All too often this resulted in their poor software highjacking their grooved hardware.

Neuroscientists report that mental rehearsal activates a network of neural coded motor programs in the brain that when primed activate the athlete’s correct physiological responses.

Neuro Priming for Peak Performance assists athletes by creating customized audio recordings. When listened to, the athlete actually strengthens the physical, mental and emotional neural pathways required for competition.

KATIE AUDIO

What is Neuro Priming and why is it an essential addition to an athlete’s preparation?

Neuro Priming is simply a fancy way of describing visualization or mental rehearsals. Customizing and listening to one’s audio tapes increases tennis IQ, reprograms old pessimistic beliefs, changes negative behaviors, speeds up the learning process, increases focus, assist the athletes in quickly fixing stroke flaws, staying on their script of patterns, and coping with stress, nervousness and the fear of failure.

Neuro priming isn’t reserved for the professional tennis players, it will truly assist any athlete serious about consistently performing at their potential.

Emotional Toughness

ea-in-sports4a_finalSolutions to Emotional Toughness

Emotional aptitude isn’t typically identifiable until after competition begins. What separates the elite competitors from the emotionally fragile athletes is their ability to thrive under perceived stress. Emotional aptitude is the ability to overcome hardships and to de-stress situations rather than magnify stressful situations. Athletes struggling with poor emotional aptitude lack confidence, composure, suffer bouts of self-doubt and possess an overwhelming fear of being judged by others. These performance meltdowns often go unseen in practice but shine in all their glory on game day.

Elite competitors are confident that their superior emotional strength will override any hardships and physical limitations. The emotionally weak athletes are convinced that the unfair hardships and their perceived limitations will override their peak performance and catastrophe will once again occur.

An old school word used to describe emotional aptitude is Grit. In regards to high achievers, researchers have come to the conclusion that successful individuals possess traits deeper than the mastery of athletic ability.  Grit is persistent courage, resolve, and strength of character. Grit is the learned ability to have “nerves of steel,” fortitude and determination. Interestingly, some athletes are pre-wired to have these essential components and some are not. For those athletes who are not natural combatants, developing emotional aptitude is critical.

Sadly, emotionally weak competitors often ignore the development of such skills.  Cultivating these character traits is what propels the few into the winner’s circle. If you believe that your emotions are holding you hostage on game day and keeping you from the success you deserve, I suggest focusing your attention on the below list of solutions. (Five solutions of fifteen are listed.)

Solutions to Foster Emotional Strength (5 of 15 listed )

  • Nurture the Love of Competition
Studies show that experiences bring more joy than possessions. The energy of the event is contagious. Athletes should enjoy competing against their past, fatigue, opponents and against time.
  • Commit to Improving
Being the best of the best (even in your town) doesn’t come without extreme effort. Improve your performance by understanding emotional aptitude.
  • Recognize That You Can’t Be Normal …and a Champion
Champions lead very different lives than normal people. Being an athletic champion is a daily life style.
  • Customize Your Training
Realize that diligent customized training trumps social, group learning. Research shows, on average, group training takes up to six times longer than quality private training.
  • Adopt a Growth Mindset
Great skills are cultivated through continuous effort more so than initial talent or IQ. Without effort…you fail by default. Understand that success starts with the effort of optimism and a growth mindset.

Neuro Priming For Success

NEURO PRIMING FOR SUCCESS
Frank Giampaolo
An athlete’s routines and rituals define their success….or failures. Anything we focus on, on a consistent basis, will most likely manifest. The challenge is that, all too often, focusing on problems will attract more….problems. It’s called the laws of attraction.

“Tournament success or failures aren’t the results of a singular performance, but rather the results of the athlete’s routines and rituals.”

I hate to say it but only conditioning an athlete’s strokes will most often result in competitive disappointment. Competitive success demands purposeful conditioning of not only an athlete’s fundamentals but also their mental and emotional states. Match tough athletes understand that overcoming performance crisis, found in every tournament, demands character.

The holy grail of tennis tips for struggling tennis players isn’t hitting another basket of backhands, it’s developing and believing in with absolute certainty “their” game.

Parents and teaching pros routinely say to the athlete before a competition, “Just play your game!” Then I ask the athlete: “What’s your game?” they reply “Haven’t a clue!”

Let’s use acting as an analogy. In acting, they call it “getting into character”. In tennis it’s morphing into an athletic warrior, understanding their best system and style of play. In acting, they call it memorizing their script. In tennis, the athlete’s script is their most proficient patterns including serve, return, rally and net rushing shot sequences. (Note: Often, an inexperienced athlete’s favorite patterns aren’t their most proficient patterns.)

The athletes I see have serious potential. But most don’t take correct action. Yeah, they rally back and forth for hours a day but disregard mental rehearsals. So they don’t apply neuro priming and therefore never achieve the results they’re capable of achieving.

Here’s the light bulb moment: Success truly begins by adding mental rehearsal to lock in the absolute certainty of one’s skills. This is done nightly by visualizing to perfection each of their strokes, shot sequences and emotional protocols to handle performance anxieties faced in heated competition. Once again, it’s simply the laws of attraction. Studies show that visualizing peak performance patterns nightly attracts the correct motor programs and mindset athletes seek. Then along with on court pattern repetition, athletes become confident in their skills and with confidence comes peak performance potential under duress.

With my clients, we customize a series of mental, emotional and stroke scripts. The athlete then reads their solutions into their cell phone’s digital recorder. This allows them to listen to their script, in their own voice, and visualize to perfection with mental rehearsals. By visualizing perfect performance, the athlete attracts positive belief. And as positive belief develops, the athlete is better equipped and motivated to make the appropriate changes needed in modifying their course of action to maximize their potential. As I stated at the beginning, an athlete’s routines and rituals ultimately define their success.
